for K - 2nd Grades
The best way to fully learn a language is by falling in love with its sound and its rhythm, and by experiencing and immersing in its lifestyle.
Our Spanish program at Lower School in 74th Street is an introduction to learning and developing vocabulary, cultural experiences, and feeling joy towards a second language through music and dance.
Students are exposed to Spanish through playful experiences with a native Spanish speaker. Through songs, dances and movement games, the children build vocabulary in an organic way. We read the lyrics of songs together, we sing, and we listen to stories, in an environment that is rich with Spanish and Latin culture. Teachers collaborate with the Spanish specialist to connect themes they are exploring in their classrooms. In second grade, the students begin writing Español vocabulary in their journals. (Spanish language instruction continues as a regular part of the Lower School's 3rd-5th grade curriculum, and is offered as an elective through Middle and Upper School.)
¿Cuando nos reunimos? When do we meet?
Every cluster in Kindergarten, first and second grade, meets with the Spanish specialist four times in a six-day cycle. These sessions blend together many ideas in movement, games, stories, vocabulary, culture, art projects and singing, and sometimes we may cook Latin or Spanish foods.
¿Cómo puedes ayudar? How can you help?
By exposing your child to as much Spanish culture as you can! New York has many Spanish and Latin institutions that have art programs, bilingual story times in libraries, and movies! Support their process by encouraging joy in learning Español.
