World Languages
Spanish & Mandarin
The study of Spanish language continues from Lower School into fifth grade. Beginning in sixth grade, all students start the formal study of Mandarin, and continue through eighth grade. Students can choose to continue Spanish by taking elective options in the sixth, seventh and eighth grades.
Fifth Grade Spanish
The fifth grade Spanish program is based on the FLEX (Foreign Language in the Elementary School) model. Students continue their study of Spanish cultures and participate in activities designed to expand their proficiency in the language.
Sixth, Seventh & Eighth Grade Mandarin
The study of Mandarin starts with helping students understand the basics of Mandarin pronunciation. After building a solid foundation, students will engage in Mandarin conversations and learn Chinese characters. All four language skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing) will be reinforced during the three-year study. Chinese culture will be introduced and integrated into the language learning. Projects will be essential in furthering to build confidence and flexibility within the language.
Spanish Elective, Sixth through Eighth Grades
Students who want to continue their study of Spanish can choose to take the Spanish electives offered in sixth, seventh and eighth grades. All elective courses review vocabulary and material from previous years of study while introducing more advanced grammar and concepts. Focus is on all four basic skills -- reading, writing, listening and speaking. The rich culture of the many Spanish-speaking countries is integrated in all elective courses. Past elective courses include Telemundo C (video production in Spanish), Spanish in New York City, and Culture & Conversation. Students are encouraged to talk with Spanish teachers if they have an idea for an elective course. Not all courses are offered every year.
