Sustainability

Since the building of Calhoun's Green Roof, which opened in May 2005, the school community has taken its leadership role in sustainability to heart: the 2006-07 school year was dedicated to the theme, GO GREEN, and new initiatives were introduced to educate the community and reduce the school's carbon footprint.

To ensure the ongoing success of these initiatives, Sylvia Kopec, Director of Administrative Services, was also named Calhoun's first Sustainability Coordinator. Under her direction, the school hopes to institutionalize many of the projects that have been started by enthusiastic students, faculty and parents. (See Curricular & Co-curricular Projects)

Green Schools Alliance: Calhoun is one of the founding members of this new consortium of private and public schools, founded in 2007, which is committed to reducing energy useage by at least 30%.

Black Rock Forest Consortium: Calhoun is a member of this organization, which works to preserve the Black Rock Forest -- a 3,800-acre area, 50 miles north of New York City -- and provides a center for on-site research and teaching, Calhoun's students use the Black Rock Forest resources for overnight and day trips. Recognition

In August 2005, Calhoun was recognized as one of the top Green Schools in the country by The Green Guide (www.thegreenguide.com), for the school's Green Roof as well as for our "Eat Right Now" lunch program, which is committed to serving fresh, local produce, and teaching the value of healthy eating.

Calhoun and FX Fowle Architects, PC, were also named recipients of the 2007 Merit Award for innovative learning environments by DesignShare, an industry resource in the area of school construction.  DesignShare jurors called the four-floor addition a "courageous design," with special mention of the Green Roof as "an innovation in the architecture for learning."
