Visual & Media Arts

Art is integrated into every area of Calhoun's curriculum--in literature, social studies, science, math, music and language studies--as well as being a focus of study and experiential learning in its own right. It is at the heart of our creative energy!

Students are encouraged to explore, experiment and take risks with his/her work, develop skills in problem-solving, learn to work collaboratively with peers, work independently, respect the work, ideas and opinions of others and respect the art of diverse cultures across history.
Experiences vary from 2D to 3D, from representational to non-representational. Activities include drawing, painting, collage, weaving, construction, printmaking, fabric arts, graphics, pottery, photography, woodwork, sculpture, woodshop and media arts. Observational acuteness and aesthetic development are nurtured.

Students study and discuss master art works as well as the work of contemporary artists, and experience great art first-hand, through field trips to NYC museums, galleries and artist studios. Several visiting artists come to the school to speak and supervise workshops, as well.

Students become “makers”-- with hands-on, project-based learning a central component of media arts and woodshop classes in Lower School to such Upper School electives like Cameras Inside Out, Repurposed Materials, Costume Design and Theater Tech.

Students’ imaginations and personal realities are challenged through the creation, contemplation and discussion of works of art. They learn to see the world through multiple perspectives by making connections to self, their communities and the world at large.
