After School Music
Calhoun's music department offers private lessons on all standard orchestral and jazz instruments as well as Chamber Music coachings (strings and winds) for more experienced students. The Calhoun School music department believes that making music in groups strengthens our community while building a love and an appreciation for music.
Individual lessons are available to students in Lower, Middle and Upper School.
Individual instruction is one teacher with one student, providing the opportunity for concentrated work and individual attention. Individual lessons promote skills, achievement and enthusiasm and are offered in 30-, 45- and 60-minute increments. Private lessons are available to LS, MS, and US students on the following instruments:
- Winds: Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone, Baritone Horn
- Strings: Violin, Viola, Cello, Bass
Fee: A lesson's length and start date determines the tuition: $60 for 30 min/$85 for 45 min/$110 for 60 min, paid in full at the beginning of each semester. Students on financial aid who participate in Calhoun School Ensembles (winds, strings and chorus) who wish to further their study of that particular instrument will be charged for lessons at a discounted rate according to the percentage of their financial aid; there is no financial aid for any 3rd or 4th grade students. Invoices will be sent from the Music Department once your lesson is arranged. A $28 registration fee for each child, each semester, is required for all lessons.
3rd and 4th grade student groups will get to sample and play many different types of drums and percussion. The class will provide a fun and open exploration of a variety of musical genres and the opportunity for aspiring musicians to express themselves creatively through their drumming. Enrollment per class is limited to six students, but if there is enough interest a second class time could be added. Please contact Meighan Stoops with questions.
Teacher: Gregory Landes
Schedule: Thursday's 3:15-4:00pm
Dates: Jan. 25-June 7 (exact number of classes TBD)
Fee: $40 per class day (start date and number of classes determines final tuition fee)
Lessons and classes are taught by Calhoun faculty, all of whom are active performing musicians and experienced educators. (see Music Faculty bios)
The faculty will assist the student in arranging for the rental of an instrument, if required.
If a student needs to cancel a lesson for any reason, 24-hours notice is required; a make-up lesson will be arranged between the instructor and the student/parent. If 24-hours notification is not given, the student will be charged for the lesson and a make-up lesson may not be possible. Exceptions for unexpected illness (i.e., departure from school during the day due to illness) may apply. There will be no make-up lessons for group and partner lessons or chamber ensemble coaching.
We are not in a position to transport children from Cub Club or ASP classes, or care for children in advance of or following their scheduled lesson. Please make arrangements to pick-up your child after school or following ASP and accompany them to their assigned lesson location at the designated time as pre-arranged with the child's music instructor. Middle school students may be given permission to leave After School Music on their own. We will not be able to make ANY exceptions to this policy.
