Congratulations to Lavern McDonald, Upper School Associate Director and social studies teacher, who has been named a 2017-18 Teacher Fellow at New York University's Hagop Kevorkian Center for Near Eastern Studies, and to Darren Anderson, ASP/81st Assistant Director and screenwriter, whose latest feature film, Quest, is currently in competition in the Austin Film Festival! 
The Girls' JV Volleyball team has won both the 2017 NYCAL League Championship and the NYCAL Tournament Championship! Cougars ended their powerhouse year with a 2-0 win on Fri., Oct. 20, against LFNY in the NYCAL Tourney Finals, in front of a packed Calhoun gym.
The Girls' Varsity Volleyball team won the NYCAL League Championship after an undefeated run this fall. The girls play in the NYCAL Championship Tournament semifinals at home on Wed., Oct. 25, 4pm. Be there, and wear your green! Go Cougars!
The Calhoun community is invited to a special Benefit for Disaster Relief on Friday, October 27, 3:30-6:30pm, at 81st Street. The event, hosted by Upper School students and open to community members of all ages--will bring together student initiatives from all Calhoun division to focus on raising awareness, political action and fundraising for disaster relief efforts. Upper School students will be researching and identifying organization(s) to receive funds.

Students and faculty across all four divisions are launching numerous initiatives to respond to hurricane victims, beginning the week of October 16 with three Donation Drives and culminating in an all-school event on Friday, October 27. Find out how you can participate!
Members of the Calhoun Girls' Volleyball program raised $2,900 during their annual Dig Pink fundraiser on Thurs., Oct. 12. And there's still time to help raise that number past $3,000, by purchasing a Calhoun Dig Pink sweatshirt before Oct. 25; find out how.
Calhoun's undefeated Girls' Volleyball teams head into the NYCAL Championship tournaments in the next two weeks, while the Girls' Varsity Soccer team is aiming for a spot in the championships for the first time in its short history!  Meanwhile, the Boys' Varsity Soccer and Varsity Cross Country teams head into their last games of the season. Upper School percussion teacher Greg Landes will perform  with the Pit Stop Players in a concert,"Absolut Collusion--An Evening of Great Russian Music," on October 23, 7:30pm, at Good Shepherd-Faith Presbyterian Church, West 66th Street. Tickets online.
Applications are now being accepted for Calhoun's Progressive Education Traditions class (PET)--a free, six-part evening course on progressive education pedagogy and practice. Calhoun Upper School students, parents, alumni, grandparents, faculty/staff as well as outside educators are invited to apply  Deadline for applications is November 13. 
Join us for a celebration of the ten-year anniversary of Calhoun's spectacular jazz program, when our professional jazz faculty performs a free concert on Wednesday, October 18, 7pm-8:30pm. Concert is free and open to the public; reservations requested.
Join The Calhoun Community Orchestra (CC0)--a great opportunity for musicians to get together and perform in an intergenerational ensemble! Parents, students, grandparents, faculty, alumni, neighbors and friends of Calhoun are invited to participate. Afternoon rehearsals are monthly, with two yearly concerts.

Members of the UNDEFEATED Girls' Volleyball program hold their annual Dig Pink fundraiser on Thurs., Oct. 12, preceding the Varsity team's home game against UNIS. Bake sale and sweatshirt sales begin at 3:15pm, followed by the game at 4pm.
Celebrate and cheer for our UNDEFEATED Girls' Volleyball teams at the first school-wide Blackout Calhoun games of the season on Thursday, October 5, with some special pre-game activities for Calhoun kids, beginning at 3:15, to help rev up the #CougarNation spirit!
Young theatergoers will love "Pete the Cat," a new live-action musical presented by Theatreworks USA, in Calhoun's Mary Lea Johnson Performing Arts Center on Saturday, October 14, 2pm-3:30. Open to the public, the 50-minute performance is recommended for children in PreK through third grade.
The Spring 2017 issue of Chrestomathy—a Middle School literary journal--is now online.  The issue features the work of last year's seventh graders (Class of 2020), with essays reflecting on their visit to the Holocaust Museum in Washington DC., and poems inspired by the works of favorite poets and songwriters.
Two Calhoun Cougars are making sports headlines beyond Manhattan! Myles Wolf '18 medalled in three separate competitions at the Maccabiah-Maccabi World Union Games this summer, as a member of the USA Fencing team. Emma Griffith '17 was one of four UChicago athletes to receive UAA Athlete of the Week Accolades, in her first season on the Varsity Volleyball team.
