Congrats to Calhoun Upper School student-athletes on an exciting winter sports season!
Girls' Varsity Basketball
The Girls' Varsity Basketball team finished 4th in the league with a 5-5 record. The team took on #5 Loyola School in the post-season NYCAL Tournament quarterfinal, earning a big 32-23 win at home. The Cougars then had the tough task of taking on the #1 team in the league, Columbia Prep, in the semifinal game, which unfortunately did not go the Cougars’ way. Including out-of-league games, the Girls’ Varsity Basketball team had 9 total wins this season, and the team is posed to continue their incredible growth in seasons to come.
Boys' Varsity Basketball
The Boys’ Varsity Basketball team ended the regular season with a 6-6 record, finishing 4th in the NYCAL league. This fourth-place league finish secured the Cougars the #4 seed in the post-season playoffs, where they took on #5 Loyola School at home in the quarterfinal game. The Cougars battled a late push from Loyola in the fourth quarter, securing a 54-48 win and a visit to Columbia Prep for the semifinal match-up. The Cougars mounted a strong comeback against Columbia to make things interesting, but ultimately fell to the league's #1 team.
Varsity Indoor Track
The Varsity Indoor Track team made the most from a season riddled with injuries. Junior Juliet Colier was the lone Calhoun Cougar participant at the first ever NYCAL Varsity Indoor Track Championships in Staten Island, where she competed in both the 55-meter and the 300-meter sprint events. Juliet ended her strong season qualifying for the championship race in the 55-meter event!
Girls' JV Basketball
The Girls' JV Basketball team ended the 2019-20 season with a big 41-9 win over UNIS to secure 3rd place in the league. With the win, the team went on to compete in the JV NYCAL Championship Tournament semifinals, falling short against #2 seeded Loyola School.
Boys' JV Basketball
The Boys' JV (Grey) Basketball team also finished the season with a big win, defeating Trevor Day in overtime to take 3rd place in the league. The team went on to face Trevor Day a few days later in the JV NYCAL Championship Tournament semifinals. Unfortunately, the game did not go the Cougars' way this time, and the team fell out of the tournament earlier than hoped.
The Boys' JV (Green) Basketball team displayed tremendous resilience over the course of their season. With a big focus on growth and development, they rose to the challenge of working together to develop fundamental skills as well as a group identity. They applied this work ethic to their in-game experiences, playing with a distinct spirit from start to finish. We're excited to see how they apply these lessons in Calhoun’s basketball program moving forward.
Be sure to check the Athletics Calendar for the upcoming spring season schedule.
