Calhoun's spring sports teams finished the regular seasons last week, with the Boys' Varsity Volleyball team going into the NYCAL playoffs as the undefeated #1 seed!
The Boys' Varsity Volleyball team, the Cougar's reigning state champion, finish the season as NYCAL League Champions and starts its run in the NYCAL Championship Tournament semifinals on Wednesday, May 8, at home (opponent TBD). The team's seniors—Aiden Griffith, Andrew Harvey, James Schirrmeister, Ruben Solnick and Gabe Worth—had a big hand in taking the team this far, and are prepped to bring home another state title for Calhoun.
The Coed Varsity Track & Field team has one last meet this season, on Thursday, May 9, and these student-athletes are already proving that they have the talent to take on the NYCAL Championship Meet by storm. The team has seen incredible success, with Pedro Assis '19, Jacob Duncan '21, Oshen Henderson Robinson '22, Oscar Llodra '20 and Morgan Weinberg '21 among the athletes who have placed in top positions throughout the season in various events. The team competes in the NYCAL Championship Meet on Tuesday, May 14.
Calhoun's Boys' Varsity Baseball team began its season with a highlight 8-1 win over Columbia Prep, setting the stage for a tight race for the NYCAL League playoff spots. Pitchers Mateo Sucre '22 and Evan Pant '21 both made a splash in the league this year, and leadership from captain Caleb Bart '19 was especially impactful for this young team. The last two league games of the season ended in close losses for the Cougars, which unfortunately resulted in the team missing the cut for playoffs by one win, but the team made sure to win their last non-league game to end on a highlight 5-2 victory over Friends Seminary.
The Girls' Varsity Softball team won its first game in program history this season! The young team was down 6-8 in the last inning before turning the game around for a huge 9-8 win. And to make it even more special, the last run was an amazing steal of home from Lucy Walkowiak, the only senior on the team. The team has one more out-of-league game this spring on Thursday, May 9.
The Boys' Varsity Volleyball (Green) team finished its season 3-3, showing huge improvement for a crew of young student-athletes—including two 7th graders! Their growth and learning this season will undoubtedly lay the foundation for the open spots on the varsity team in seasons to come.
Let's go, Cougars!
