First grade students solve problems within these three broad topics using tactile materials:

• Number sense (including estimation, skip counting, measuring, addition and subtraction, number pairs and more) using counting bears, unifix cubes and Cuisinaire rods.
• Place value using base ten blocks
• Geometry using geo-boards, tangrams and pattern blocks

Math topics are frequently reviewed to deepen students’ understanding. In addition to daily math work, our Math Coordinator visits classes to lead students in enrichment activities.
