English

Middle School English prepares students with the skills to be successful writers, readers and literary critics. Middle Schoolers explore a wide variety of texts, and take on progressively challenging writing assignments.

Starting in sixth grade, students engage in close reading and guided conversations about the structure of writing, and develop competencies in grammar and the writing process. Seventh grade English focuses on the “power of words” as a theme. Students read literature connected to this theme, develop techniques in creative and expository writing, and gain confidence in their voice as writers.

The thread through 8th grade English is the power of stories to connect, to inform and to entertain. Students dive into a variety of short and long texts to hone their skills in literary analysis, annotation and thesis development. Middle Schoolers are also exposed to the cross-disciplinary reach of language through collaborations with the art and music departments.
