World Languages

Middle Schoolers at Calhoun have the option to study Mandarin or Spanish. The Middle School world language program fosters communication, fluency, a love for languages and interest in Latin and Chinese cultures. To achieve this, the program focuses on the four basic skills of language acquisition: speaking, listening, reading and writing. An essential aspect of language courses in the Middle School is the reinforcement of communication through technology and its capacity to enhance the different ways in which a language is expressed.

Students are encouraged to demonstrate their learning through video presentations and projects, short story writing, voice recording, simulated scenarios, songs, group collaboration, games, cultural activities, pictures, in-class acting, and other assignments of their choice that best fit their strengths. By the end of Middle School, students will have built a strong foundation that will allow them to succeed in second language acquisition, along with a desire to continue to learn the language in high school and beyond.
