Clubs at Calhoun: A Student Perspective

by Ethan R. '22

Calhoun is filled with students who have interest in many different things. This is particularly demonstrated in all the wide variety of clubs at Calhoun. If you have an interest that you would like to explore, start a club! All it takes is a form that you fill out!

Clubs allow me to explore my passions. Not only do I get to do that, but I also get to meet new friends who share a love for that topic. Leading the Economics club and Sports Marketing club has taught me how to research, facilitate discussions, and lead a group of other students. These skills can be applied to things outside of the classroom. Sometimes club discussions will even reach beyond their set classroom spaces. In fact, one club – the Philosophy club – was so successful that it ended up becoming a class taught in the Upper School. Thanks to popular demand and students' enthusiasm for philosophy, one of our history teachers now offers a Philosophy elective!

There is something fulfilling seeing everyone arrive in the morning to a club meeting with the common goal of learning about a topic and having fun while doing it. The smiles on faces during Community Time (the period in our schedule when clubs meet) carry on throughout the day and into our classrooms. Meeting to discuss a field of interest could even lead to something larger; I know it definitely has for me. The clubs that I have joined continue to guide me in what I want to study in the future.
