Dear Calhoun Families,
I hope this brief note finds you all well and starting to adjust to the "new normal" we will be facing together for the next weeks or potentially longer.
I am writing to report that one of our Middle School parents informed us yesterday that they tested positive for the COVID-19 virus; that parent was in the Commons at Big Calhoun on the morning of March 10. Fortunately, that parent self-quarantined at the first sign of any symptoms and is already well on the road to recovery. To date, no other family members have exhibited any symptoms. As you may be aware, New York City health authorities are no longer tracing contacts of individuals with confirmed cases of COVID-19, nor are they recommending that anyone who is not seriously ill be tested. At this point, we are all, in effect, in self-quarantine. Nevertheless, I wanted you to be aware of this development, since I know that rumors can spread even faster than this virus.
In less somber news, faculty and administrators at Calhoun have been working hard even during break preparing for the resumption of classes remotely a week from tomorrow. I'll be back in touch later this week with more details about that, and about online outreach we are planning for parents in the first few weeks back.
Maeve and I are up in Massachusetts with our three kids — one working from (our) home and two completing their college semesters remotely. This is certainly not what we expected empty nesting would look like! I hope you are safe and gathered with family and weathering this storm. And please remember — stay calm for your kids; background music is better than background CNN.
In partnership, Steve
