A Special Appeal for Emergency Financial Aid Dear Members of the Calhoun Community,
In a normal year, this would be the time we would write to you to launch our spring campaign for the Calhoun Annual Fund (CAF). The CAF serves as the foundation for annual giving that we, like all independent schools around the country, rely upon to close the gap between the cost of tuition and the real cost of educating our students. The CAF had a strong fall and was well on its way to meeting its target. We were looking forward to our spring campaign to reach our goal for increasing participation across the entire community, united as One Calhoun in support of our faculty, students and school.
But this year is far from normal. As we write this, many of our families are facing uncertain futures, with huge disruptions likely in their economic circumstances for at least the next year. While the economic fallout of the COVID-19 response is still becoming clear, we already know that some families in the Calhoun community will be facing extraordinary challenges meeting tuition obligations for the coming year.
In response, the Board of Trustees, the CAF leadership team and the Calhoun administration are launching a special appeal this spring to make emergency financial aid for 2020-2021 available to Calhoun families facing significant economic disruption as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. From now until May 15, we ask you to consider a gift to The Calhoun Annual Fund with a special designation for "Emergency Financial Aid 2020-21." All funds raised through this special appeal will be distributed to current Calhoun families who apply and qualify for emergency financial aid for the coming academic year. We hope that the community response will allow us to at least remove the uncertainty some families are feeling about whether their children will be able to remain in Calhoun next year.
Families in need of emergency aid to meet tuition expenses next year should contact Andrew Hume for details about the application process.
One of the hallmarks of Calhoun has always been the powerful bonds between members of the community – families caring for other families who are suffering illness or loss, students looking out for peers who are in need or in distress, employees who all feel connected to every student in the building. As we recognize the extraordinary challenges some of our community members will face in the near future, we hope we can continue to look out for each other.
Please consider making a gift that will keep our community strong into next year, and if you have already given to the annual fund this year, we hope you will consider an additional gift.
In partnership,
Steve Solnick, Head of School Jon Brayshaw, Chair of the Board of Trustees
