Virtual Calhoun Movie-Making Camp

CMMC is going virtual this year but will still contain all of the hallmarks of this signature program: collaborative student-led projects and an expert eye towards filmmaking techniques.

As technology changes at a rapid pace, so do the possibilities to be creative at home. In CMMC we will create a live action film, an outline for a story through live online sessions, and our own films, all by using technology available at home (video cameras, phone cameras, webcams, etc.)

Students will learn narrative structure and blocking. We will also create a stop motion animated film together. With the advancement of technology, stop motion filmmaking is now available on computers, tablets and phones with cameras. Students will be given a stop motion account for their available device, and instruction and demonstrations will be given on creating animated films with at-home objects (toys, clay, paper, etc.). We will meet and discuss a theme and work on our projects during our production time, and these shorts will be edited together into a cohesive whole.

From imagination to creation, the CMMC kids will be able to take part in enhancing their films with a variety of audio. One of many takeaways for our young creators will be to acknowledge the importance of sound to film.

Three main components observed during the filming process will be sound effects, scoring, and sound-tracking. In order to do this, students will need access to a smart phone and home computer. With a smartphone audio recording app (i.e. iPhone Voice Memo) students will be able to create soundscapes, voiceovers, and capture a variety of other audio that is essential for their creations. With the use of audio software (i.e. Garageband, LMMS) on a home computer; students will be able to approach the process of scoring and sound-tracking their projects. Age-appropriate tutorials will be given throughout camp for students to gain the skills required to capture and share their own footage.

Please Note: We reserve the right to discontinue a camp due to insufficient enrollment or extraordinary circumstances.
