Borrowing Library Materials
Library resources are available to all members of the Calhoun community, including students, faculty, staff and parents. At the 81st Street library, books and other materials circulate for two weeks (with an option to renew). See what we have in our library collection: online catalog.
Collections & Database Resources
In addition to general and reference collections, the Library maintains numerous special collections in audiobooks, world languages and professional development. The Library also subscribes to several online databases, including Brain Pop, Brain Pop Jr., Infobase Learning, JSTOR, ProQuest, Gale/InfoTrac,Teaching Books.net, Grolier Encyclopedia and World Book Encyclopedia. (Electronic databases are available only to Calhoun community members. Lower and Middle Schoolers may request the master password(s) from the librarians; all other community members can use their portal login to access the databases.)
The library maintains recommended reading lists by grade and genre. Suggested Summer Reading is posted on the portal in May of the preceding school year. Summer reading assignments for 5th-7th graders are posted there as well. Required books for Upper School courses are given to students based on their individual course sign-ups; all required books are supplied by the school.
Desktop computers and printers are available for use. Middle and Upper School students may borrow laptops for use in the library under the supervision of library staff.
Throughout the school year, Calhoun's Neen Hunt Library at 81st Street is the site of numerous lunchtime events, including author visits and library recitals, open to students, faculty and staff.
Annual Book Fair at Barnes & Noble
Sponsored by the Parents Association, the Annual Book Fair is held each year in early May at Barnes & Noble/82nd St. & Bway. In addition to receiving a percentage of all sales during the day, Calhoun's libraries and classrooms are the beneficiaries of generous donations by parents, grandparents and friends who purchase and donate books directly to the school (all pre-selected by our teachers and librarians). Donors have the option of having the family or child's name imprinted on a bookplate inside.
