Facilities and Location
Calhoun has three buildings, each of which are easily accessible via the #1, 2, or 3 subway, or the M5, M104, M7, M11, M10 buses. If you are arriving by car, take the 79th Street exit from the Henry Hudson Parkway.
Lower School students who live at least one mile from school may be eligible for the free NYC yellow school bus. Students may also be eligible for free and half-fare public transportation; information is available upon request.
Main Building 81st Street
Calhoun's main building on West End Avenue and 81st Street serves students in 3rd-12th grades. Academic areas are organized by division — Lower, Middle and Upper School — with each discipline divided into seminar spaces. In addition to the academic floors, the nine-story building is home to:
Robert L. Beir Lower School
Completely renovated in 1989, the Robert L. Beir Lower School building is a distinguished five-story townhouse on West 74th Street between Amsterdam and Columbus Avenues. Approximately 200 children, 3's-2nd grade, enjoy large, bright classrooms, library, music room, theater/auditorium and rooftop garden. An outdoor terrace and gym at Calhoun's 74th Street Lower School building provide our youngest students with ample space for programmed physical education classes and recreation.
Older students also frequent Central Park and Riverside Park, both within walking distance.
Connected to the 81st Street facility is the Calhoun Townhouse, a five-story brownstone that houses the school's administrative offices, including the office of the Head of School, College Counseling, Admissions, Communications, Development, Business and Technology. The townhouse was purchased in 2000 from none other than Mick Jagger (hence, it is sometimes referred to as The Jagger House).
