For Cub Club (4-5) or Homework Help (5-8): Register for the semester, or fill out the Drop-in Care: Passes and Request form, redeemable for 5 days of as-needed drop-in care throughout the school year.
Prices listed are for the full semester. Financial aid is available for ASP.
Classes run daily from 3:30-4:45pm, with the option for Extended Day care until 6pm. Students will enjoy snack and downtime from 3-3:30pm before classes begin.

Coding and Game Design

Using Scratch, a visual programming language developed by the MIT Media Lab, students create engaging, interactive animations, and video games complete with characters, settings, obstacles, and controls. New and returning students are welcome.
What's in a Song?: Writing, Recording, & Releasing Music
Grades 5-8

Express yourself through the rewarding process of writing, recording, and releasing music! In this class, students will study the inner-workings of their favorite songs, learn common pop song format, and basic music theory and musicianship skills. We'll learn how to write catchy and memorable melodies, create lyrics inspired by their life experience, and collaborate, edit, and write together as a group. Students will be introduced to the recording experience and the process of releasing music in today's day and age. By the end of this class, students will have at least one song written and recorded and available for listening and sharing with their families! I look forward to joining you all on the exciting process of writing, recording, and releasing music!
Magnificent Movement

Learn the art of visual expression through dance and mime. Students will learn new moves, create collaborative choreography, and compose scenes that tell stories without props or words. Experience the magic and fun of movement! Please wear/bring comfortable clothes.

Artists will explore air-dry clay through a variety of hand-building techniques, creating their own unique sculptures. Alternative methods for sculpting will also be explored, including recycled assemblages, paper sculptures and much more!
Teen Yoga and Mindfulness

Join us for an energy releasing yoga class that’s just for tweens and teens! We’ll work on basic and challenging yoga poses such as inversions and arm balances, group poses and partner poses including acro-yoga poses, yoga games and mindfulness activities, breathing exercises and more! We’ll bend, stretch, balance and breathe as we strengthen our bodies and learn about ourselves – what makes us special, how we can connect to others and calm our brains and bodies. Our class will end in deep relaxation where all of the kids will get yummy smelling foot rubs! This is a great complement to any sport or specialty, for the non-competitive child, and for anyone that loves or wants to check out yoga. Yoga mats will be provided. Please wear/bring comfortable clothes.

Through a mix of creative gameplay, skills training, and introductions to the Calhoun Athletic Department's culture, participants will learn the game and leave excited to continue their soccer journey at Calhoun.

Have you ever wanted to make things disappear or float in the air, find a selected card, or just be generally amazing? We will learn mystifying magic tricks with everyday objects. Basics of magical trickiness, including sleight of hand and misdirection, will be covered. Get ready to make your friends marvel, gasp, and laugh!
Professional magician Tanya Solomon has toured nationally with her solo show, been a cast member of the Coney Island Sideshow, performed on the Drew Barrymore Show, and entertained thousands of kids around NYC as her alter ego Razzle Dazzle. She has taught circus and magic since 2010.

Acting for the Camera

This class is designed for students who would like to act in front of the camera. We will rehearse monologues and scenes, cover the basics of auditioning for commercial and film, as well as watch, discuss and learn from our performances.
Minecraft and Circuits
Grades 5-8

Students will use the beloved and popular Minecraft platform as a gateway to learning about the properties of electricity. Using Minecraft as the medium, they will design machines that use pistons, levers, buttons, traps, and combination locks. Each project will use the game’s version of circuitry (called “Redstone”) to power buildings with floors, walls, and doors that open and close.

For those with loads of energy left after school, Calhoun Athletics offers the Calhoun Run Club! This program introduces basic running form, technique, and strategy throughout different drills and runs. It is also an introduction to the Calhoun Athletics philosophy and core values. All runner levels are encouraged! Please wear sneakers and athletic clothes. Students will be outdoors, weather-permitting. They will return to the school for 4:45pm dismissal.

The Calhoun Chess Club is open to 4th-8th graders regardless of experience. We will use the most recent technologies (SmartBoard, internet, iPad, laptop, etc.) to explore the royal game, from the basic ideas of check and check mate to deep strategy. All materials will be provided. Students will be given both group and individual instruction, and will receive end-of-the-semester gifts to complement their education!
Draw, Doodle, Pop!

This unique drawing class will focus on traditional, and non-traditional, drawing techniques, getting inspiration from old masters and contemporary artists such as Jim Dine, Vincent Van Gogh, Keith Haring and many more. Think Kehinde Wiley-inspired self portraits, Takashi Murakami pattern making and Edgar Degas-inspired figure drawing.

Calhoun Athletics, in partnership with U1 Sports, is excited to offer this new basketball training class. Basketball league players will learn and refine the fundamental skills of the game while building athletic self-confidence through clinic and league play. Led by former college basketball players, this class will emphasize spacing, cutting, ball handling, passing, shooting, footwork, team offense, and team defense. Each class will include 30 minutes of skill training followed by league play among class participants. U1 League training is great preparation for future school and/or travel team play. Please wear sneakers and athletic clothes.

Students will experience Mandarin language and culture through this fun and interactive immersion class. Laurel Project learning occurs in a creative and participatory setting, using music, dance, drawing, creative movement, games, role play, physical props and storytelling. The children will be immersed in an interactive Mandarin-speaking environment: learning basic words and phrases as well as the grace and beauty of Chinese ribbon dance and paper crafts.
