Students continue to develop their engagement in reading through independent book selections, assigned readings and author studies. Students focus on comprehension strategies such as retelling of the story, predicting and making personal connections to the text.
Students work independently, with peers and one-on-one with a teacher to refine their writing process: from brainstorming to drafting, editing and revising, and ultimately publishing. They focus on grammar, punctuation, spelling strategies, vocabulary study, and handwriting instruction.
Third grade students explore structured and free-flowing spoken word poetry, dissecting poems for rhythm and rhyme. Students look at how poetry, spoken word and song lyrics can be a catalyst for discourse about social justice and change in our world.
