3rd–5th Grade

In third through fifth grades, students learn through a dynamic, collaborative curriculum that nurtures and challenges children to learn and grow as individuals and community members.

Students begin and end each day with their cluster teacher, who supports the child's intellectual, social and emotional growth. In the course of a week, students study language arts, math, social studies, science, Spanish, physical education, art, theater, music, library, media arts, woodshop and for fifth graders, life/study skills.

Inside 3rd-5th Grade Classrooms

Library

Calhoun strives to instill a love of reading, an appreciation of books, and an understanding of the vast information resources available to students. Students spend a designated class period in the library, where they learn the basics—how a library is organized, the components of a book, and how to select a book that is right for them. As students progress, they learn about different authors and illustrators and explore various types of literature.

Clubs & Special Courses

Lower School Special Courses provide additional avenues for students to explore their own interests. Past courses have included filmmaking, student government, community service, yearbook, storytelling, math quest, birdwatching, cooking, kickball, and computer tech. Cross-grade groupings enhance a sense of community while providing new opportunities for socialization.
