Fall 2020 Hybrid School Library Policy

In order to help ensure the safety of the Calhoun community, the library is going to be remote for the rest of the fall. This means that the physical library space will remain closed to all students, except for US students who are directed to 124 for a class. But even though the library itself is closed, the books are still here for everyone to enjoy!

While we test the new library policy and iron out the wrinkles, we ask that students borrow only one book at a time. The option to check out more books at once will return in the future. We also thank you for your patience as it may take longer than usual to get books.

  • Print books are available through Library Takeout (See below for instructions). Use Destiny Discover to search the Calhoun library’s print collection.
  • Ebooks are available to students at any time through Sora. If you aren’t sure how to log into Sora, take a look at Cassandra’s Sora video.

Book maintenance:

When print books are returned to the library, they will be disinfected and held for two days before they become available to another student. This is in accordance with current safety recommendations for circulating materials.

Library Takeout for 81st Street (MS/US):

MS and US students can request books through the Book Request form. Camilla will check the book out to the student’s patron account and put it in a paper bag labeled with their name and cluster. The bag will go to the pickup area, which is the green Bookmobile cart right outside the library, next to the elevators.

When the book is ready, Camilla will send an email to the student to schedule their pickup from the green cart. Please do not come downstairs before getting this email. The goal of scheduling pickups is to avoid unnecessary overlap between clusters/divisions in the lower level.

Pickups will be scheduled using 10-minute “windows” or “time slots.” Students will be able to come down to the lower level at their convenience within that span of time. Members of the same cluster may be able to share a pickup window.

Library Takeout Steps for MS/US:

  1. Request – Ask for your book by name with the Book Request form.
  2. Wait – Please wait patiently for Camilla to email you.
  3. Schedule – Set up a time slot to pick up your book.
  4. Pick Up – Your bag will be on the green cart by the elevators.
  5. Enjoy your book!

Returning books:

When you’re ready to return your book, please put it in the return box on your floor. You also have the option to bring it with you when you pick up your next book and leave it in the returns box next to the cart.

Library Takeout for 83rd Street (LS-E):

LS-E students can request books through the Book Request form. Camilla will check the book out to the student’s patron account and put it in a paper bag labeled with their name and cluster. Books will be delivered from the library at 81st Street to classrooms at 83rd Street every Thursday. Requests can be made at any time, but requests that come in on Fridays won’t be delivered until the following week.

Library Takeout Steps for LS-E:

  1. Request – Ask for your book by name with the Book Request form.
  2. Wait – Books will be delivered to 83rd Street on Thursday.
  3. Pick Up – Find the bag with your name and take your book home.
  4. Enjoy your book!

Returning books: When you’re ready to return your book, please put it in the books return box located by the front desk on your floor.

Help! I don’t know what to read!

If you’d like help deciding on your next book, Camilla is here to help! (It’s her favorite part of being a librarian.) Take a look at Destiny Discover (link) to see what books are available; if you still aren’t sure what you want, fill out the Book Advice form (link).

Help! I’d like a certain ebook, but Sora doesn’t have it!

Calhoun’s Sora collection is constantly growing to match our print collection, with new books added every week! Please email Camilla to request an ebook that the library doesn’t have. She will let you know when it’s available.

Help! I really want this one print book right now!!!

The library is taking extra steps this year to ensure that everyone can read safely. This means that it may take longer than usual to get a book. Thank you for your patience with this process!
