Calhoun Summer Jazz Camp
Since 2010, Calhoun Summer Jazz Workshop has offered a one-week intensive series of day-long classes, workshops and ensemble playing opportunities designed to provide an immersion and/or introductory experience for high school kids to the world of jazz improvisation and music.
Campers form ensembles and learn the basics of jazz improvisation; explore jazz history by listening to significant recordings and viewing performances; learn fundamentals of music theory necessary for improvisation; and above all, get a chance to make music with other students. The workshop is open to players of all instruments and features accomplished instructors in keyboards, brass, woodwinds, strings, guitar, bass and percussion.

What They’re Saying
“I improved more in this week than I have in the last three months!”
“The best part of jazz camp was not only seeing my musical ability increase, but becoming inspired to learn more about music. The faculty was completely dedicated to us. For me, it was a new experience; a challenging and rewarding one.”
“I learned so much from my masterclasses—I wanted at least a week more of time with everyone. The best part of the camp was just being able to play with everyone; how helpful everyone was, how open they were, and the community that we all became.”
“I gained a lot of confidence in my ability to play. Learning how to solo and having a whole band backing you up is a lot different from just playing by myself. Having the instructors challenge you to solo instead of just waiting for you to volunteer was really helpful, because I got way more practice and soloed like 20+ times a day!”
