5th-8th Grade Enrichment Classes & Services

Registration Note

To sign your child up for ASP, a Veracross portal account is required. If you have not yet signed up for Veracross, contact websupport@calhoun.org.

For Homework Help (5-8): Register for the semester, or fill out the Drop-in Care: Passes and Request form, redeemable for 5 days of as-needed drop-in care throughout the school year.

Classes run daily from 3:30-4:45pm, with the option for Extended Day care until 6pm. Students will enjoy snack and downtime from 3:10-3:30pm before classes begin.

Prices listed are for the full semester. Thursday and Friday classes are prorated to reflect fewer weekly sessions in the semester. Financial aid is available for ASP.

Amplified Electronics
Grades 5-8

Instructor: Launch

Amplify your child’s interest in electronics with this captivating, hands-on class! Kids delve into the fundamentals of electronics and programming through a variety of projects and experiments using a micro:bit v2 microcontroller board. Students explore basic electronic components such as breadboards, resistors, and potentiometers and how they are used to create simple circuits. Using Scratch and text-based programming languages like Python, participants learn how to control electronic devices using code. With the micro:bit serving as the “brain,” students build a series of projects including a blinking LED, a temperature sensor, and even a functioning compass! Launch’s philosophy is that anyone can (and should!) play around with cutting-edge electronics in a fun and playful way.

Ceramics
Grades 5-8

Students will work with clay and learn the basic skills of hand-building: pinch pots, coiling, and slab work. They will then learn to combine these skills to hand-build more complex pieces, including timing, etching, decorating, and glazing. Students with more experience will have a chance to try throwing pots on the pottery wheel. Everyone will fire and take home a couple of handmade pieces each semester.

Puzzlemania
Grades 5-8

Calling all crossword fanatics, Sudoku fans, and people who do the NYT Connections and know they could come up with better categories than the ones in that day's game. In this class, we'll learn about both solving and constructing puzzles, puzzle history, and different types of puzzling around the word.

Circus Skills
Grades 5-8
Tuesdays; 3:30-4:45pm

Juggling, slacklining, plate spinning, diabolo yoyo, and more! While rotating through activity stations, students will practice patience, resilience, and a growth mindset. To help them stay motivated, they'll keep a progress log of their personal bests in each station. As we progress through the semester, students will be able to allocate more time to the stations they want to improve on and learn advanced skills.

Calhoun Athletics, in partnership with U1 Sports, is excited to offer this new soccer class. Participants will learn the fundamental skills of the game in a fun and growth-based environment. Through a mix of creative gameplay, skills training, and introductions to the Calhoun Athletic Department's culture, participants will learn the game and leave excited to continue their soccer journey at Calhoun.

Please wear sneakers and athletic clothes. Note: this class takes place at the 85th Street gym.

Teen Yoga and Mindfulness
Grades 5-8

Join us for an energy releasing yoga class that’s just for tweens and teens! We’ll work on basic and challenging yoga poses such as inversions and arm balances, group poses and partner poses including acro-yoga poses, yoga games and mindfulness activities, breathing exercises and more! We’ll bend, stretch, balance and breathe as we strengthen our bodies and learn about ourselves – what makes us special, how we can connect to others and calm our brains and bodies. Our class will end in deep relaxation where all of the kids will get yummy smelling foot rubs! This is a great complement to any sport or specialty, for the non-competitive child, and for anyone that loves or wants to check out yoga. Yoga mats will be provided. Please wear/bring comfortable clothes.

In partnership with U1 Sports, Calhoun Athletics is excited to offer this basketball training class. Basketball participants will learn and refine the game's fundamental skills while building athletic self-confidence through clinic and gameplay. Led by former basketball players, this class will emphasize spacing, cutting, ball handling, passing, shooting, footwork, team offense, and team defense. Each class will include 30 minutes of skill training followed by play among class participants. This training is great preparation for future school and/or travel team play. Please wear sneakers and athletic clothes.

Tabletop and Strategy Games

This class is for anyone wanting to be part of a fantastical or science fiction adventure or to create landscapes filled with life-like scenery! We welcome people of all experience levels who want to paint models and figures, make dioramas of faraway or familiar landscapes, or participate in roleplaying or strategy games. Gloomhaven, Warhammer, and other similar board games will be offered. Paints, brushes, models, and games will be provided but we are open to evolving based on your interests!
