The potential for snow equals a memorable season for our weekly Central Park EDventures! Winter is our favorite of them all as possibilities can include sledding, snow sculptures, an Explorers-only style of "fishing" (conditions permitting) and an original variety of awesome outdoor games & activities. This exhilarating, FUN outdoor program builds confidence, while encouraging teamwork, creativity and open-ended education. In the spring, expect exciting activities such as shelter building, bird tracking and a wilderness obstacle course.

For those with loads of energy left after school, Calhoun Athletics offers the Calhoun Run Club! This program introduces basic running form, technique, and strategy throughout different drills and runs. It is also an introduction to the Calhoun Athletics philosophy and core values. All runner levels are encouraged! ASP athletes should expect to spend half of one practice participating in a larger Calhoun Athletics event. These experiences might include attending part of a Calhoun game or working with Middle School or High School athletes. Please wear sneakers and athletic clothes. The mission of SOCS (Students Of Color Society) is to create a sense of community among Calhoun's students of color. The group will support students by nurturing their self-esteem, fostering positive relationships among students, and providing students an opportunity to feel part of a collective. In addition, SOCS acts as a comfortable forum for students to confront matters of race, ethnicity and identity in developmentally appropriate ways. The goal is to empower students of color to bring their gifts, talents and resources to their Calhoun experience. It is Calhoun's belief that students who feel supported, confident and proud of their identity will be grounded socially, emotionally and culturally, and thus more successful, fuller participants in the Calhoun community.
Mandarin Through Music, Art, and Movement

Students will experience Mandarin language and culture through this fun and interactive immersion class. Laurel Project learning occurs in a creative and participatory setting, using music, dance, drawing, creative movement, games, role play, physical props and storytelling. The children will be immersed in an interactive Mandarin-speaking environment, learning basic words and phrases as well as the grace and beauty of Chinese ribbon dance and paper crafts.
Mei-Yin has taught her popular Chinese ribbon dance routine all over schools, arts institutions and museums in NYC.

Join us for an energy releasing yoga class that’s just for kids! We’ll work on basic and challenging yoga poses such as inversions and arm balances, group poses and partner poses including acro-yoga poses, yoga games and mindfulness activities, breathing exercises and more! We’ll bend, stretch, balance and breathe as we strengthen our bodies and learn about ourselves – what makes us special, how we can connect to others and calm our brains and bodies. Our class will end in deep relaxation where all of the kids will get yummy smelling foot rubs! This is a great complement to any sport or specialty, for the non-competitive child, and for anyone that loves or wants to check out yoga. Yoga mats will be provided. Please wear/bring comfortable clothes.
Game Design: Code Basics with Roblox Studio

Have fun and learn code basics by building out games that include traps and power ups. Students will learn the programming language Lua and how the concepts in this programming language are symmetrical to any text based coding language that they may encounter in the future.

In this class students will learn to draw from life, which is all about the art of learning to see. We'll explore a variety of embroidery stitches and basic watercolor techniques and then put these skills together to create dynamic mixed-media portraits.

The Calhoun Chess Club is open to 3rd-6th graders regardless of experience. We will use the most recent technologies (smart board, internet, iPad, laptop, etc.) to explore the royal game, from the basic ideas of check and check mate to deep strategy. All materials will be provided. Students will be given both group and individual instruction, and will receive end-of-the-semester gifts to complement their education! Seventh and eighth grade students may register with permission from the instructor.

Choreography 101

Choreography 101 is a movement composition class for anyone interested in using their bodies for expression. Students will learn basic compositional principles (shape, level, dynamic, counterpoint, unison, etc) and dance history. We’ll study and get inspired by different world dance cultures, classical ballet, modern, and postmodern dance, with corresponding choreographic figures. Composition/improvisation exercises would then be modeled on making short studies in the style of that class's tradition or choreographer. Students will explore creating solo and group compositions. Weather-permitting, classes will move outdoors and experience making site-specific work. Come share your creativity!

All the Tea will be a sisterhood of self-identifying Black girls grades 6-8, gathered together sipping tea and spilling the tea. We will divulge 100% in all things Black-owned and established: drinking tea from Brooklyn’s very own Brooklyn Tea, reading and discussing Amanda Gorman’s incredible Queendom, diving into YA books of choice, talking about all things music, and honoring our crowns (hair)! We’ll create a space to learn about and engage in the daily ritual of #selfcare.
