In music class, third graders took part in a songwriting project inspired by books on social justice and activism, as well as the music and life of Changemaker Nina Simone. They began by forming groups and selecting a book to explore. Drawing from the lessons and stories they read about, students wrote their own lyrics, picked different instruments, and collaboratively composed original songs. They rehearsed their pieces as an ensemble, before sharing what they created with friends and families.
