5th Graders Explore Writing Process Through Creation Stories

As part of a major project for their Humanities class, fifth graders engaged with each step of the writing process: prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing.

After their overnight trip to Frost Valley, fifth graders worked together to brainstorm questions related to nature that could be answered creatively through creation stories. Over the next few weeks, students read folktales and creation stories from all over the world as inspiration. They tested out different topics and drafted their stories along a story mountain structure. Next, fifth graders began the revision process: working with peers and meeting one-on-one with teacher Sabrina Jen as they learned how to edit their own stories. They also illustrated covers to accompany their stories in the final publishing stage.

The writing project culminated in a gallery walk-style publishing party, where students celebrated each other's hard work by leaving thoughtful compliments via Post-it Notes. Through this project, students deepened their understanding of the writing process while building confidence as creative thinkers and storytellers.
