In English class, eighth graders have been reading poems and songs to explore themes and various poetic devices, such as alliteration, imagery, rhyme and more. To complement their in-class learning, students went on a field trip to The Nuyorican Poets Café, a New York City cultural icon since 1973! During the visit, a Nuyorican teaching artist and poet performed, the group discussed the culture and craft of the café, then held a workshop which culminated in an open mic for students.
