First Graders Solve Math Story Problems

Our first graders honed their problem-solving skills by working through various math story problems in their workbooks. They tried different math strategies, such as using their fingers, cubes, and blocks, to understand the underlying concepts and find the answers. As teachers Camille Jumarang-Oyola and Alexa Alifonso describe, "It is important that children solve math problems in ways that make sense to them."

Students then created their own story problems that involved the addition or subtraction of double and single-digit numbers. After writing their stories, they also showed their strategies for solving the problem. In the following week's math workshop, students solved each other's story problems.
