Fourth Graders Apply Fraction Concepts in Culinary Math Activity

As a culminating activity in their study of fractions, fourth-grade students engaged in a real-world math application by adapting smoothie recipes. To start, each group was given a recipe card for a different type of smoothie – mango lassi, strawberry banana, or orange creamsicle. The recipe, however, was only enough for one serving. Fourth graders drew from their knowledge of fractions and multiplication to modify the recipe so there was enough for everyone in the group.

Ingredient by ingredient, students used equations to calculate the correct, modified amount. They used two different strategies, including a number line and skip counting, to double-check their answer – ensuring they were staying true to the recipe's proportions. Next, each group worked together to measure out and combine the ingredients into a yummy treat. This hands-on experience reinforced students' understanding of equivalent fractions, measurement, and proportional reasoning.
