Our After School Program's Girls Who Code class welcomed data scientist Madelyn Goodman to speak about her work in the field and the role of data. As an opening activity, students were tasked with writing down everything about themselves they could think of in two minutes. When each student shared their facts, Madelyn talked them through how that data could be used and analyzed. They then designed their own surveys for their classmates to fill out – asking about favorite novels and preferred genres to assess what types of books would be most profitable for a publishing company to sell. Students looked for trends in the data they collected from their surveys and discussed what recommendations they would make to the publishing company.
