Montessori Math's Spiral Learning Approach

Montessori math includes a variety of strands such as numeration, operations, memorization, measurement and geometry that vary in complexity and follow a ‘spiral’ learning approach throughout the three-year cycle. First graders start geometry with physical geometric solids, move to flat ‘insets’ representing one-dimensional shapes, and then continue manipulating and experimenting with shapes through second and third grade. By the third grade, they are drawing complex proofs of equivalencies between shapes, and discovering the relationship between triangles and all polygons.

Similarly in memorization, first graders practice creating bead pairs that equal ten, and then by third grade can use the same beads to find factors and multiples of numbers. Using hands-on materials, students are able to dive into the math curriculum and make thrilling discoveries. Experiencing these concepts in numerous ways ensures a deep understanding of mathematical concepts that will stay with students for years to come.
