MS Puppetry & Performance Elective Combines Art and Theater

The Middle School Puppetry & Performance elective combines art and theater in a unique and engaging way. During the course, each student designed, crafted and constructed their own original puppets. When making sock puppets, Middle Schoolers learned practical skills like threading a needle and sewing a button as they personalized their projects. Equally as important was the work students did to bring their creations to life. Through improvisational exercises and scene work, the class collaborated to develop their characters' storylines, traits and personalities.

For their final presentation, each student filmed a video where they wrote and performed a script featuring one of the puppet characters they created, and one of the characters another member of the class created. The project was the culmination of students' artistry, imagination and partnership.

In addition to learning about different puppetry styles from around the world, the class also had the chance to tour Jim Henson's Creature Shop in Queens and visit the Art Students League in Manhattan.
