We are thrilled to announce that John Wang, P’29, ‘33, has been elected as the new Chair of Calhoun's Board of Trustees.
John has been a dedicated member of the Calhoun community, initially serving as an admissions ambassador before joining the Board in 2021. His leadership has been invaluable as Chair of the Committee on Trustees, Vice Chair of the Board, and Co-Chair of the recent Head of School Search Committee.
"Calhoun provides a superb and joyful education that results in driven and compassionate students who are prepared to engage with a changing world,” says John. “In partnership with our new Head of School, Celeste Herrera, and our exceptional faculty and administration, I am honored to chair the Board of Trustees as we look forward to a new chapter for our school community."
In his professional life, John is the Presiding Judge of the Midtown Community Justice Center, the nation’s oldest community court, providing alternative-to-incarceration programs for young adults and individuals facing mental health or substance abuse challenges. He made history as the first Asian American elected to the 1st Municipal District of the NYC Civil Court and has received the Hon. Robert T. Russell Jr. Award of Innovation for his compassionate leadership. John also serves on the New York State Judiciary's Task Force on Mental Health.
John and his wife, Christina, are the proud parents of Elias (Class of ’29) and Caitlin (Class of ’33), both Calhoun students since kindergarten. The family lives in Inwood with their golden retriever, Clover, and two cats, Emma and Elsa.
In addition to electing John to the position of Chair, the Board also elected its new Executive Committee for the 2024-25 school year: Karen Greene, P’25, Terry Haas, P’29, Andrea Hsu, P’28, Edward Newman, P’25, Margaret Spencer, P’29, and Zoë Vlachos, P’30.
As we welcome John to his new role, we look forward to working together under his leadership and are confident that his vision and dedication will help shape an exciting future for Calhoun.
