From the City to the Orchard: Real-World Lessons in Goods & Services

As part of their Social Studies unit, second graders have been exploring the concept of goods and services. In the classroom, they discussed the difference between the two and identified essential providers in the community. To bring their learning to life, students ventured beyond the school walls to visit a variety of local businesses — including salons, grocery stores, delis, a church and a synagogue, the post office, and a fire station.

Their understanding deepened further during a field trip to Dr. Davies Farm in Congers, New York. At the orchard, students picked apples, enjoyed time together outdoors, and saw real-life examples of goods and services in action. This fall favorite tradition not only reinforced classroom learning, but also offered a special moment outside the city — the perfect prelude to their upcoming study of maps and cardinal directions.
