Spring Sports Recap

From the baseball diamond to the tennis court, the spring season challenged Calhoun's student-athletes to take risks and be adaptable. We're proud of all they accomplished and how they showed up for each other. Special shout-out to the teams and individual athletes who competed in the playoffs!

Varsity Boys/Non-Binary Students Baseball

The Varsity Boys/Non-Binary Students Baseball team, led by Head Coach Scott Tunchman and Assistant Coach Frank Padilla, had a season full of fun, excitement, and busy adventure. The season began as far back as the fall with off-season conditioning to build strength and create bonds between players – further solidified by the team's trip to Florida in March. Despite having a young roster, the team finished with a record of 15-4-1, overcoming "injuries, bad weather, and some bad luck to post a phenomenal season," writes Scott. The team had a dominant 10-2 win in the NYCAL semifinals and lost an "absolute heartbreaker" to Columbia Prep in the finals in extra innings. The team set a record for having four players make the All-NYCAL team and multiple players broke team records throughout the season, including Brian S. 26's 16 strikeout game, Quentin R. 27's 30 RBIs, and Julian G. '26's 37 runs scored. Senior Ian A. '25 "dominated on the mound, and he hit extremely well. He also led our team, held players accountable, and set high standards," says Scott.

Varsity Boys/Non-Binary Students Tennis

One of the highlights of the Varsity Boys/Non-Binary Students Tennis team's season was their win against UNIS. As Coach Nicola Massa writes, the game "was really fulfilling and just a great time overall to watch the final match pull through to clutch the win." The team developed a good sense of camaraderie throughout the season and many players made great improvements in their game. Hugo D. '26 was 7-3 and "an absolute legend" – setting the standard for what a mentally tough player looks like. The team capped off their season by competing in individual and team competitions at the NYCAL championship tournament.

Varsity Boys/Non-Binary Students Volleyball

The Varsity Boys/Non-Binary Students Volleyball team had a strong season, ending with an exciting home match versus Dalton during the second round of the NYSAIS volleyball tournament. Calhoun was one of only eleven teams to make the state tournament – a testament to the team's dominance throughout the season. One of the highlights was the team's match against UNIS in the NYCAL semifinals; it was "a very emotional game with the possibility of being the last game" of the season, writes Head Coach Oral Channer. Julian T. '25 was a leader on the court and Freddy D. '26 was a leader on the side. Reflecting on the season, Oral writes "It was a pleasure seeing the transition and growth from the start to the end of the season. It speaks volumes." The team is sending off a solid group of seniors, but the future of the volleyball program remains bright.

Varsity Girls/Non-Binary Students Softball

The Varsity Girls/Non-Binary Students Softball team ended their season on a hight note, defeating Brooklyn Friends 15-17 in their final game. Another memorable moment was the team's decisive win against Trevor Day in mid April. Throughout the season, the student-athletes showed growth and resilience – working together to improve their essential skills and showcasing their strong sense of teamwork. We're excited to see how next year's team capitalizes on the progress made this season.

Varsity Track & Field

The Varsity Track & Field team competed in six regular-season meets, before the NYCAL championship meet on May 13. The Girls/Non-Binary Students team placed second overall at the meet, with standout performances from Simone A. '27 (1st place 400M, 1st place 200M), Lila S. '27 (1st place 3000M, 3rd place 1500M) and Sienna B. '26 (3rd place shot put). The team also came in second in the 4x400M relay and third in the 4x800M relay. On the Boys/Non-Binary Students side, Ben S. '25 placed third in the 400M. To close out the season, Simone A. '27 competed in the NYSAIS championship meet, which included qualifying runners from every independent school in the state, and finished third in the 400M with a time of 59.03.

Junior Varsity Boys/Non-Binary Students Volleyball

The Junior Varsity Boys/Non-Binary Students Volleyball team had an overall record of 5-2. The players learned a lot throughout the season and "it was wonderful to watch their team chemistry develop and for them to automate rotations," which allowed them "to work on more skill-central stuff necessary for a great offense and defense," writes Coach Madeline Snyder. Players were able to gain a lot of valuable on-court experiences, including a game against Trinity in early May where they only had seven players available and they stepped up into positions they didn't normally practice. "They were disciplined about the things they already knew how to do, and so they won pretty definitively in two sets," describes a proud Madeline. Many players led the team well, including Tristan E. '26, Ridley H-S. '27 and Mason S. '27.

Middle School Baseball

The Middle School Baseball team spent daily practices learning the ins and outs of the sport. Despite having a lack of numbers on their roster, their games were memorable learning experiences that challenged the team to be adaptable. On an individual and team level, the student-athletes improved their game and advanced their knowledge of baseball. Coach Ishmil Pair cites Val S. '30 as the MVP, as he was always eager to help.

Middle School Boys/Non-Binary Students Volleyball

The Middle School Boys/Non-Binary Students Volleyball team's season was defined by growth on an individual and team level. Through regular practices and games against area competitors, including a few memorable home games, the student-athletes built their serving, passing, setting and blocking skills. A number of players were new to the sport, but the team collectively built their knowledge of the game and the coaches hope to expand on the foundation next season.

Middle School Track & Field

The Middle School Track & Field team had one particular practice that was a turning point of their season – where they began to function as a team rather than as individuals. Although the workout was a challenging one, they met the challenge together and were pacing, cheering, and motivating one another. There was a lot of raw talent on the roster, and the team only got better when they became a cohesive unit. The team achieved its main goal of helping each other improve, evidenced by student-athletes embracing the opportunity to work together in the relay and practicing with the baton during their own time. Leonardo S. '30 led by example and with determination throughout the season.
