Transforming Calhoun's 81st Street Learning Spaces

Summer 2022 brought an important and exciting transformation of Calhoun's learning spaces. We worked with Verona Carpenter Architects (VCA) to create a new vision for our main Upper School areas on the fourth and seventh floors of the 81st Street building, with the aim of improving seating, lighting, acoustics, ventilation and traffic flow and creating more modern, effective teaching and lounge spaces. We are thrilled to welcome students back to our freshly renovated learning spaces for the 2022-2023 school year!

The images here portray preliminary visions for the classroom areas and the elevator landing on the fourth floor. The locker area by the elevator has been transformed into a student lounge. While retaining our open floor plan, our teachers have gained more control over lighting, acoustics and furniture layout in classroom areas. On the seventh floor, we reconfigured the floor plan to create a third Upper School laboratory, reequiped all the labs on that floor (including the Middle School lab), and redesigned the central classroom area.

Calhoun has always been a home for pedagogical innovation, and these new spaces in our 81st Street home honor the pathbreaking spirit of the building while providing state-of-the-art environments for our teachers and students.
