Umuganda Day 2023: Caring for & Building Community

On Saturday, October 14, members of the Calhoun community came together for a day of service and cleanup at Riverside Park. Calhoun's annual Umuganda Day of Service is modeled after the monthly practice in Rwanda, in which the entire country cleans up neighborhood litter and gathers as a group to keep their surrounding park spaces beautiful. Despite the rain, families and students "were very dedicated and did an amazing job caring for the park," writes Community Service Learning Director Debbie Aronson.

Leading up to the event, Upper School students also made and delivered sandwiches to Grassroots Grocery community fridge on West 100th Street  – honoring Umuganda Day's mission of caring for and building community.
