Upper Schoolers Participate in Model UN Conference in Washington, D.C.

A group of thirteen Upper Schoolers, from 9th graders to seniors, traveled to D.C. to participate in the Washington Area Model United Nations Conference (WAMUNC), a four-day experience in diplomacy and international affairs hosted by The George Washington University. Calhoun had an impressive showing, with three students winning an award at the conference — Tomas M. '24, Josephine F. '23 and Zach B-W. '25.

The conference was a simulation of how the UN functions, with students participating in sessions and committees on topics ranging from current-day issues to recreations of historical events. Leading up to the conference, students had to research past and present events in order to engage in debates and discussions on their committees.

Examples of committees the students served on: Disarmament and International Security, World Health Organization, Gulf Cooperation Council, The1959 Antarctic Treaty, Franco-Prussian War: German Unification, Ad Hoc Committee of the Secretary General
