The Marine Biology club, led by Eleanor L. '24 and Tomas M. '24, has joined the #TeamSeas movement, a global campaign to remove 30 million pounds of trash from our ocean, rivers and beaches by January 1, 2022. As Eleanor and Tomas explain, "there are 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic waste estimated to be in our oceans: 70% of our debris sinks into the ocean's ecosystem, 15% floats and 15% lands on our beaches." They encourage Calhoun community members to "learn more about the ocean, how it provides for us and how it's struggling," citing Conservation International as a good resource.
The Marine Biology club has put together a campaign that will monitor their progress. They will also be holding a fundraiser outside 81st Street on Thursday, December 16 from 3-4:30pm. They will be selling baked goods, necklaces, prints and more!
