US Spanish Teacher Mariana Amato Published in Journal of Latin American Poetry

Outside of Calhoun, Upper School Spanish teacher Mariana Amato is a creative writer. Earlier this year, several of her poems were published virtually in Distrópika, a journal of Latin American poetry. As Mariana describes, the poems "belong to a book project that’s still unpublished titled Papelitos, which translates to confetti or scraps of paper. In this project, I address an anecdote in the life of my grandmother, who went blind and then recovered her eyesight through one of the first cornea transplants. I then unpack the threads of this anecdote in poems that address the history of migrations that inform my background, my Jewish ancestry, motherhood, aging, and the tense political climate when I was growing up in Argentina during a dictatorship."
