Kindergartners have been learning about identity! As teachers Heather Jupiter and Kyoko Honma explain, they began their months-long study by reading We Are All Alike, We Are All Different, written by a class of kindergartners who were engaged in a similar study. This book helped students understand that there are many different aspects of our uniqueness, including what we look like, what our families are like, where we live, what we like to do, and what we like to eat.
The class continued on a literary journey, reading several books and stories that explore a variety of aspects of identity to inform their study. In addition, students spent time observing, discussing, and sharing pieces of their own identities with each other. They made colorful posters to reflect their acquired insight, appreciation and vocabulary, and to highlight what makes them unique. For the conclusion of the study, students shared their final projects and other highlights of their classroom work with their families.
