In dazzling lights and surrounded by cameras, Calhoun families, faculty, staff and friends wasted no time celebrating our remarkable school on Friday evening. Thank you to our Benefit Co-Chairs, Development Office and the many volunteers and contributors who made our awards show – turned paddle raise – turned dance party such a tremendous success. In particular, our Kids' Art collection is among the best I have seen across many independent schools, and the eclectic array of experiences and gifts represented in our silent auction certainly channels our Calhoun vibe. What a night!
Hours before, our fourth grade nonfiction project share filled the Lower School gym with landmarks of interest to our curious city dwellers. In addition to parents, our 5th grade travelled to 85th Street for a visit and to share a bit about Middle School at Calhoun – what a wonderful moment of interconnectedness across our campuses, and a window into an exciting year ahead for the class of 2031.
In last week’s US assembly, students extended their appreciation to current and prior Spring Session creators, the majority of which represented faculty and student collaborative pairs. Central to a Calhoun education is the close, generative relationship between faculty and students, and it is always rewarding to hear how meaningful and memorable these intensive experiences are for our students.
I am also writing with an important administrative update. As you know, three finalists for our Dean of Diversity, Equity and Belonging role recently visited campus. After reviewing candidate feedback submitted by students, parents, alums, faculty, staff and trustees, and several rounds of intensive discussion with the hiring committee, I have decided to continue our search.
Calhoun will always take our students’ lead as we build a more inclusive community. Before spring break, I will be consulting with students, faculty, and our administration as we move forward. I am also happy to meet with any families who would like to provide insight or ask additional questions. Please reach out to me directly to schedule time to connect and join me in thanking our current Diversity, Equity and Inclusion committee, who center the needs of our students while serving as resources to faculty, staff, families and alums.
And finally, in a week where the release of our academic calendar may motivate you to think of the year ahead, we noticed a growing audience during our Upper School re-visit days for admitted 9th grade students who are also making a big decision for the upcoming year. Thank you, 5th grade, for making every morning a “Breaking Down the Walls” dance party with our future Calhouners!
